Prosperity Now Report Underscores Racial Wealth Gap in Atlanta

Across all measures of household financial security, households of color are faring worse than White households in Atlanta. 

  • Almost 70% of Black families are liquid asset poor compared to 22% of white families. 
  • Median household income for a  White family $83,722 compared to $28,105 for a Black family. 
  • The average African American-owned business is valued at $58,085 while the average value of a White business is $658,264.

Prosperity Now’s 2017 report, Advancing Collective Prosperity through Entrepreneurship in Atlanta, identifies entrepreneurship as a pathway to wealth building through business ownership. Commissioned by AWBI with the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Kendeda Fund, the report highlights the need in Atlanta for coordinated efforts amongst service providers to support African American entrepreneurs and a clear need to focus on the financial stability of African American families in Atlanta.
